TIP:

The Basics of Addressing Your Wedding Invitations

When it comes time to place the addresses on the outer envelope of your wedding invitations, there are several basic rules of etiquette that you should keep in mind. These include:

  • Handwrite the addresses rather than printing off mailing labels
  • Spell out all names and avoid using initials
  • Do not use symbols on addresses (i.e. you should spell out words such as "and")
  • You should not place "and Family" on the outer envelope of your wedding invitation
  • Street names should be spelled out rather than abbreviated (i.e. you should write "Street" rather than "St."
  • Spell out city names (i.e. "St. Louis" should be written "Saint Louis")

According to traditional etiquette, state names should also be spelled out when addressing the outer envelope of a wedding invitation. Since the post office prefers the use of abbreviations, however, it is acceptable to break away from this tradition.
